On l'a découverte au tout début des années 2000. Ses vidéos postées sur YouTube sont remarquées par My Major Company. On connaît la suite : l'engouement général, le 1er album "Letter to the Lord" (2011) couronné par le public comme par la critique, et dont Google avait choisi le morceau "I Know" pour sa campagne publicitaire. 3 ans plus tard, elle enregistre "Faces". De quoi cartonner. De quoi se poser des questions, également S'ensuit une période de doutes, tant artistiques qu'existentiels. Irma s'exile pendant deux ans. Entourée d'instruments, elle écrit, compose, apprend à mixer et à produire ses propres morceaux, redécouvre sa voix lors de cours de chants. Elle devient "artiste-entrepreneuse", constituant sa propre équipe de collaborateurs. "Jusqu'ici, je ne m'étais jamais trouvée dans les codes de la féminité, on me traitait de garçon manqué car je voulais être forte et ambitieuse. J'ai enfin réalisé que c'était une qualité et non un défaut, qu'il y avait autant de beautés possibles que d'intelligence." Cette pluralité s'impose dès la première écoute du 3ème album d'Irma, "The Dawn". Mixé à Londres par Rhys Downing (Mark Ronson, Brett Anderson, Hollysiz), il a été produit par la chanteuse, qui y réunit tout ce qu'elle aime : du R&B, de la pop, du blues, de la folk, de la soul, un méli-mélo qu'elle qualifie d' "afrofolk", où dialoguent Lauryn Hill, James Blake ou Michael Jackson. Entre le dancefloor et la mélancolie intime dévoilée, "The Dawn" dévoile la personnalité d'une artiste qui a décidé de s'affirmer telle qu'elle est. Une femme puissante naît devant nous, elle s'appelle Irma et on ne va plus pouvoir se passer d'elle.
