Début 2016, les musiciens Common, Robert Glasper et Karriem Riggins se sont retrouvés en studio, créant ainsi la toile de fond émouvante du 11e album de Common, le politiquement chargé "Black America Again". Les trois amis se connaissaient depuis la fin des années 1990, la camaraderie se sentait donc organique. Au fur et à mesure de la création du trio, ils ont commencé à remarquer que quelque chose de différent se dessinait - quelque chose qui prend racine dans les sons chauds de R & B d'antan, mais encore très ancrés dans le présent. C'était de la soul music avec un rebond moderne, un hybride jazz-rap dans l'esprit de A Tribe Called Quest. Ainsi est né August Greene une sorte de super groupe formé des trois compère, Common qui est l'un des rappeurs les plus respectés avec trois GRAMMY, un Oscar, un Golden Globe et un Emmy tout de même. Robert Glasper, le Pianiste de Jazz qui est aujourd'hui l'un des artistes phare de Blue Note Records, il a récemment gagné un Grammy pour son album concept sur Miles Davis sorti en 2016 "Everything's Beautiful". Et pour finir Karriem Riggins, aujourd'hui le batteur officiel de Stones throw, il a travaillé sur la majorité des albums de J Dilla, de The Pharcyde et de Common, plus récemment on le retrouve crédité sur les albums de Kanye West ou de Kaytranada. August Greene, c'est le mariage parfait du jazz, du hip-hop et de la soul. Tout au long de l'album, vous ressentez l'abondance des notes glissantes de Glasper, la grande honnêteté des paroles de Common et la subtilité nuancée des percussions de Riggins. C'est un son fluide qui fait cruellement défaut dans le paysage d'aujourd'hui et un moment propice à l'enseignement pour la prochaine vague de créateurs.
